Siding calculator: squares, boxes, J-channel and corners

Enter the wall perimeter and height, the gables and the openings, and get squares of siding, the boxes or planks to order, and the starter, J-channel and corner posts that go with them. Works for vinyl, fiber cement and engineered wood lap.

What a square of siding is

Siding, like roofing, is sold and priced by the square: 100 sq ft of wall covered. Vinyl comes in cartons of about two squares; fiber cement and engineered wood come as planks, and the coverage of a plank is its length times its exposure — a 12-ft fiber cement plank at a 7-inch exposure covers 7 sq ft.

The siding formula

Net area = (perimeter × wall height) + (gables × width × rise ÷ 2) − openings. Each gable is a triangle, so its area is half the base times the height from the eave line to the peak. Add waste to the net area, divide by 100 for squares, and divide by the product’s coverage for boxes or planks.

Gables: 2 × (30 × 8 ÷ 2)+ 240
Openings: 10 windows × 15 + 2 doors × 21− 192

Accessories

Starter strip runs the full perimeter at the bottom course. J-channel wraps windows, frames the sides and head of doors, and runs up both rakes of every gable, where the length is the sloped side — the square root of (half the width² + the rise²). Outside corner posts come in 10-ft lengths, one per corner per 10 ft of wall height. Soffit, fascia, inside corners and utility trim are separate lines.

Before siding goes on, the wall behind it has to be framed and sheathed — the stud calculator covers both — and on retrofit jobs an insulated sheathing or wrap may go under it; see the insulation calculator. To turn squares into a price with tear-off, wrap and trim labor, use the estimate builder or the siding estimating software pack.

Frequently asked questions

How many squares of siding do I need?

A square is 100 sq ft. Add the wall area (perimeter × wall height) and the gable triangles, subtract windows and doors, add waste, and divide by 100. A house with a 160-ft perimeter, 9-ft walls, two 30-ft gables with an 8-ft rise, 10 windows and 2 doors nets 1,488 sq ft — about 16.4 squares with 10% waste.

How many boxes of vinyl siding are in a square?

Most double-4 and double-4.5 vinyl lap siding is packed two squares (200 sq ft) to a carton, so one box covers two squares. Check the carton — some profiles and premium lines are packed differently.

Do you subtract windows and doors when figuring siding?

Yes for the net area, though many estimators leave small windows in as part of the waste allowance. This calculator subtracts 15 sq ft per window and 21 per door; use the other-openings field for garage doors and large glass.

How much waste should I add for siding?

Around 10% for a simple rectangle with a couple of gables. Houses with dormers, many corners, bump-outs and short wall runs often need 15% or more, because each cut leaves an offcut that is too short to reuse.

How much J-channel do I need?

Run it around every window (about 16 ft for a 3 × 5), up the sides and across the head of each door (about 17 ft), and along the gable rakes. J-channel comes in 12½-ft pieces; add about 10% for the miters and laps.
