Frequently asked questions
How do landscapers estimate jobs?
In two halves. Softscape is area and count work — square feet of sod, bed area for mulch and fabric, plants by container size — and hardscape is assembly work, where a paver patio carries base stone, bedding sand, edge restraint, joint sand and the labor to cut and set it. Both are priced the same way here: quantity times your material cost and your crew hours, with burden and markup applied at the end.
Why does my paver patio number keep being wrong?
Usually because the base and the access are missing. The pack prices the patio at a 6-inch compacted base and gives driveways their own heavier line, then adds a restricted-access factor for the jobs where nothing bigger than a wheelbarrow fits down the side yard. Those two lines are the difference between a profitable install and a weekend of free labor.
Does it cover irrigation and lighting?
Yes — irrigation is priced by zone (spray and rotor zones separately, since head count and labor differ), plus drip line by the foot, a controller line, French drain and downspout tie-ins, and low-voltage fixtures by the each. A full design-build yard bids on one sheet instead of three.
Do I need this if I mostly do residential maintenance?
Probably not for mowing routes — that is scheduling software, not estimating. This is for install and design-build work where a proposal decides the sale, and for the commercial jobs where a GC wants a schedule of values and monthly pay applications with retainage. Those come with every plan, which is the part landscape-only quoting tools do not do.
