Brick calculator: bricks, mortar bags and veneer ties

A modular brick with a ⅜-inch joint covers 21 square inches of wall, about 6.86 bricks per square foot. Pick your brick size and joint, enter the wall, and get the brick count, the mortar and the ties for veneer.

How to calculate bricks per square foot

Add the joint to each face dimension, multiply, and divide into 144: bricks per sq ft = 144 ÷ ((length + joint) × (height + joint)). For a modular brick, 7⅝ × 2¼ inches with a ⅜ joint, that is 144 ÷ (8 × 2.625) = 6.86.

The Brick Industry Association publishes 6.75 for modular brick because modular coursing is laid three courses to 8 inches — a slightly fatter bed joint than a strict ⅜. Either is defensible; the difference on a 1,000 sq ft wall is about 110 bricks, less than the waste allowance.

Worked example: a 30 × 8 ft wall with 30 sq ft of windows is 210 sq ft net. 210 × 6.86 = 1,440 bricks, plus 5% waste = 1,512. At about 37 per bag that is 41 bags of mortar, and a veneer wall needs 79 ties.

Mortar and ties

The mortar count starts from the typical 37 modular bricks per 80-lb premixed bag and scales by joint area: a bigger brick has more joint per unit, so fewer bricks per bag. It is a planning number — the bag’s coverage chart and your crew’s actual use beat it.

For veneer over framing, the IRC limits each tie to 2.67 square feet of wall. Confirm spacing and any wind or seismic requirements in the code edition your jurisdiction has adopted.

Backup walls in block come from the concrete block calculator. To price labor per thousand brick alongside material, use masonry estimating software or send these quantities to the free estimate builder — and see how to estimate a construction job for the rest of the bid.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks are in a square foot?

About 6.86 modular bricks per square foot with a strict 3/8-inch joint; the Brick Industry Association's nominal-coursing figure is 6.75. Queen and engineer modular brick run about 5.76, king about 4.8, and utility about 3.0 per square foot.

How many bricks does a bag of mortar lay?

Roughly 37 modular bricks per 80-lb bag of premixed mortar is the typical rule of thumb. Larger units carry more joint per brick, so a bag lays about 30 king or 24 utility brick. Check the coverage on the bag, and expect production masons to mix masonry cement and sand instead.

How much waste should I add for brick?

5% is typical for a running-bond wall with few openings. Walls with many openings, soldier courses, arches or pattern bonds need 7–10%, and chipped or off-color units culled from the pallet come out of the same allowance.

How many brick ties do I need?

The IRC limits each veneer tie to supporting no more than 2.67 square feet of wall, which works out to about 38 ties per 100 sq ft. Check spacing limits and the wind and seismic provisions in your adopted code edition before ordering.

How do I calculate bricks for a wall?

Take length × height, subtract windows and doors, multiply by bricks per square foot for your size and joint, then add waste. A 30 × 8 ft wall with 30 sq ft of openings is 210 sq ft; at 6.86 modular brick per sq ft plus 5% waste that is 1,512 brick.
