What belongs on a submittal log?
Number, spec section, description, type (shop drawing, product data, sample, mock-up), who currently holds it, the date it was sent, the date a response is due, the date it came back, and the review status. The column that stops arguments is ball-in-court: a log that shows who owes the next action turns a weekly meeting from debate into reading.
How long does an architect have to return a submittal?
Whatever the contract says — commonly fourteen calendar days from receipt, sometimes ten business days. The number matters less than tracking it: a late submittal review is a schedule event you can only claim if you logged the date it was sent and the date a response was due. This tool flags overdue items automatically for exactly that reason.
Is a submittal log the same as a submittal register?
In practice yes, though some specs distinguish them: the register is the planned list built from the specification at the start of the job, and the log is the live record of what has actually moved. Starting from the register and updating it as things move gives you both, which is what this tool assumes.
Why does a subcontractor need their own log?
Because the GC's log tracks the GC's exposure, not yours. If your material release depends on an approved sample and the approval is three weeks late, the only person with a dated record proving that is you. That record is also what turns a delay claim from an assertion into a document.
